A Brief History of GCI Philippines


1962 Gerald Waterhouse opened the Philippine office in Makati, Metro Manila, as growing numbers of Filipinos expressed interest in the Plain Truth magazine and other church publications.
1963 The first baptism in the WCG Philippines took place in Northern Luzon.
1965 The Manila Church was planted. Plain Truth mailing list peaked at around 200,000.
1970 The World Tomorrow television program was aired over Channel 7. More local churches were planted and a number of Filipino church members were ordained to pastor them. The Philippine Office began to oversee church members scattered in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Micronesia.
1974 Pastor General Herbert W. Armstrong conducted an evangelistic campaign at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. About 15,000 came to hear him.
1984 Church membership in the Philippines reached the 5,000 mark.
1990 The church was registered locally with the Securities and Exchange commission (SEC).
1995 The Pastor General announced major doctrinal changes and the WCG moved towards evangelical orthodoxy. A large number of members left the church unable to accept the transformation of the denomination towards evangelical orthodoxy.
1996 Pastors and leaders began to pursue further studies and training to equip themselves for the move and transformation towards evangelical orthodoxy.
1997 WCG was granted an observer status in the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC).
1998 Pastor General Joseph Tkach visited the Philippines and met with Philippine evangelical leaders in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
1999 WCG was recognized as a member of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC).
2002 40th year of the Worldwide Church of God in the Philippines. Eugene Guzon was appointed as the first national director of the WCG Philippines by Pastor General Joseph Tkach. The first National Board was inducted into office by the Superintendent of Missions Randal Dick. The nine members of the first National Board are the following: Amado Aquino, Jessup Bahinting, George Escara, Max Fabricante (chairman), Len Joson, Jose Manzano, Carlos Pizarro, Ezra Raduban and Rey Taniajura.

Grace Communion International (GCI), formerly known as the Worldwide Church of God (WCG) is an evangelical denomination whose mission is to live and share the gospel. We are committed to living and sharing the good news of what God has done through Jesus Christ.

Our denominational world headquarters is located at Glendora, California, USA while our national office is located in Quezon City, Philippines. Dr. Joseph Tkach is the President of the Grace Communion International (GCI).

For GCI Philippines, Eugene Guzon is the National Director.

In February 2007, ND Eugene Guzon was appointed as Missions Developer for the Philippines, North East Asia and the United Arab Emirates. As Missions Developer, he is responsible for promoting the missions work of the denomination in the region. This includes missions awareness programs, identification and development and mentoring of indigenous leaders, pastoral supervision, ensuring biblically sound teaching, and networking for the gospel.
